A Mother Wrote A Letter To Party City Because The Costumes For Little Girls Were Overly 'Sexualized'

Source-  But when Lin Kramer recently browsed a selection of toddler costumes for her 3-year-old daughter, the problem wasn't which one to choose — it was the choices themselves.

Party City, which claims to offer more costumes than any other retailer, offers 16 career-themed costumes for boys and only three for girls. And Kramer wasn't happy with the distinct difference between the boys' and girls' outfits for the same occupation.

"I was surprised," she told TODAY.

So she did something about it by reaching out to the company in an open letter.

"Toddler girls are not imagining and hoping that they will grow up to become a 'sexy cop' — which is clearly what your girl costume suggests; rather, young girls, just as young boys, see and admire their family members and neighbors offering service to their communities and delight in the idea of doing the same," she wrote. "I am absolutely appalled that your business reinterprets girls' innocent and well-intentioned dreams into this costume."

Kramer requested that the company at least offer girls more options.

"Even if you insist (and I really hope you don't) on offering the sexualized version of costumes for little girls, you could *also* offer girls the realistic option of the same costume," she urged.

Hey lady, I don't want to kill your vibe right now, but when you start referring to costumes that are meant for 3 year old girls as sexy then YOU are the one that is making it weird. Adding a skirt to a police officer uniform may not be true to form, but when it's meant for someone that's about a decade away from wearing a bra, it's not overly sexualized either. Let's just say what it is. Little girls want to look pretty. That's why 95% of them are princesses. It's not because they admire the job that princesses do you fucking psychopath. Your 3 year old daughter doesn't want to be a cop because she understands how important they are to society. She's 3, you're lucky is she can wipe herself without help, never mind understand the role of every career that has a corresponding costume in Party City. She wants to be a cop because the cop costume looks it mated with a princess costume.
Either that or your 3 year old has a strong desire to be galavanting around town in a fucking pants suit. If that's the case then I don't think we have to worry about her dolling herself up for the boys in class anytime soon. This isn't just a female thing either. Little boys don't want to dress like firefighters because they one day dream of running into burning buildings. They want to be firefighters because firefighters are bad ass.

We are talking about little kids. Half the time they don't know what the fuck they want, or why the fuck they want it. Can we maybe stop short of writing concerned letters on behalf of children that don't even know where they came from? By the time this woman's daughter is worried about looking sexy or choosing a career path she won't even remember what she was for Halloween when she was 3. There are plenty of other unnecessary feminist movements to support without having to question the authenticity of nurse's skirt made for a toddler. A three year old girl's desire to dress girly isn't a part of some larger issue, getting upset about it is.
