Uproxx- Dakota Johnson may rank as one of Hollywood’s most coveted rising stars, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t already dreading the obstacles that come with being an actress with the audacity to age in Hollywood. In a new interview with Vogue UK, the Fifty Shades of Grey talent not only acknowledged the issue of ageism in the entertainment industry, but she took it to task for shutting the door for talented actresses in favor of a youth bias. Johnson cited her own family as proof that ageism is alive and well in Hollywood. Using her mom Melanie Griffith and grandmother Tippi Hedren as examples, Johnson described the climate as “f*cking brutal” even if you’re a star of their caliber. “Why isn’t my mother in movies? She’s an extraordinary actress! Why isn’t my grandmother in movies? This industry is f*cking brutal,” she stated candidly. “No matter how tough you are, sometimes there’s the feeling of not being wanted. It’s absurd and cut-throat. Whenever I have downtime, I’m unsure that I will ever work again. I don’t know what it is, but it’s a definite thing that happens to me.” Time to remake your picket signs! Revamp your outrage! There is a new cause is town and it's so much more severe than people being discriminated against for their skin color or gender. Why of course, it's ageism! People being treated differently dependent upon how old they are? I can't believe we have been letting this slide for so long. Who gives a shit about Trayvon Martin or the 'glass ceiling' when Dakota Johnson's matriarchy can't get an acting gig!?! I don't about you, but I - for one - am appalled by the superficiality of the entertainment business. Casting people based on how well their looks fit a well defined role? Talk about pretentious. If a 30 year old can talk and walk like a high school student better than an actual high school student then it should be their job to lose. Fuck cinematic integrity, acting prowess should be the sole criteria for employment in Hollywood. Listen, I am not going to sit here and pretend I can spot the intricacies of a good actress, but I certainly can spot the intricacies of a woman's appearance. That's why it's not too fucking hard to figure out why Melanie Griffith and Tippi Hedren are having a hard time finding work. Melanie Griffith is 58 years old. Common sense says the most logical role she could play would be that of a grandmother. What kind of grandmother do you know that has the tits of 25 year old? There no distinct role that Melanie Griffith is fit to play on a regular basis because there is no distinct age bracket she embraces. She looks every bit a woman in her 50's that is trying desperately to hold on to her 40's, and in turn she actually can't fully pass as either. If she can't accept what she is then why the fuck should Hollywood?
Same goes for Tippi Hedren. She's an EIGHTY FIVE year old woman that look like she's ready to go out on the town. This may come as surprise to Dakota, but there aren't too many opportunities for women on death's doorstep that look like they are DTF. Grandma's hair may be '50 Shades Of Grey', but that's not going to stop her from trying to star in the sequel. These broads can't even convince themselves of their own age, how are they going to convince a overly critical audience? Melanie Griffith fits the role of an over-the-hill cougar to a T, but you can bet your ass she's still auditioning for roles fit for people 20 years her junior. Tippi Hedren looks the part of a sweet old grandmother, but you just know she's auditioning for the parts that Melanie Griffith should be auditioning for. This family of lunatics isn't getting snubbed because of their age, they are getting snubbed because they are acting like age doesn't exist.
