Uproxx- “Let me tell you the truth,” says David Blatt in an interview for “Yedioth Ahronot“ that will be publish on Friday in full. “It was hard for me watching the last games. I can’t watch the finals. So I just don’t watch the games and I settle reading the results on the internet. The playoffs I would still watch, but not more than that.”
Last year with Cleveland you have reached the finals with an excellent record. Why did they choose to part ways with you? “I can’t think of any reason in the world. Maybe for them, thinking forward, I wasn’t the person to lead. It hurt me very bad. It surprised me, I didn’t feel well, but you move on. There are disappointment in life, the question is what do you do when you take a blow. I could have coached in the NBA next season. It’s more about timing . Sometimes great coaches have to sit outside.” So if the Cavaliers lose tonight they are required to buy out David Blatt's overseas contract and have him come back to fight Tyronn Lue to the death for the right to coach their team next season, correct? I think that's the only fair way to do. It's either that or they have to become co-coaches. Poor bastard is just sitting over in Turkey teaching a bunch of schlubs how to play basketball on 3 hours sleep, because he can't restlessly lay his head to pillow without wondering why he got canned midseason. And you know what, with each passing day it becomes harder and harder not to wonder the exact same thing right along with him. Not only did he have a better regular season record than his successor, but he got his team just as far in the playoffs without the help of Kyrie Irving AND without the benefit of Draymond Green dick-punching his way out of the lineup. I guess last year's loss of Kevin Love looks more like addition by subtraction right about now, but the team that Tyronn Lue is coaching in the Finals is unquestionably better than the one David Blatt was coaching in the Finals. Think about it this way. If Kyrie Irving didn't release his inner 'NBA Jam' and start firing home low percentage shot after low percentage shot in Game 5 then this Cavaliers team would have been less successful than one in which Matthew Dellavedova was a significant contributor. How could you even blame David Blatt? The guy is just trying to find a little bit of closure, and Tyronn Lue has far from proven that he's capable of being the proverbial 'hot new boyfriend'. Blatt just needs one thing to look at and say "okay, that's why I was fired". With the in-fighting that continued well after his departure, the lingering inability to utilize Kevin Love effectively, and the likelihood that the Cavaliers bow out in 6 games (again), he simply hasn't gotten it yet. If I were him the mere sight of the person that openly emasculated me for a year and half before having me booted without so much as a "it's not you, it's me" would nauseate me too.
