In his June 17 deposition, lawyers asked Rose about consent. One of Doe’s lawyers read aloud that section of Rose’s sworn deposition—which is not available to the public—during today’s press conference. Here is that segment that was read aloud to reporters on the call:
Question: Do you have an understanding as to the word consent? Derrick Rose: No. But can you tell me? Question: I just wanted to know if you had an understanding. Derrick Rose: No. Nope, that headline wasn't some veiled joke at the expense of Derrick Rose implying that he raped a woman with a group of his buddies. It wasn't some humorous rational for his alleged actions like "he didn't rape her, he just doesn't know what 'no' means, haha, get it?". No sir. By all accounts that brilliant display of a one year education at Memphis came straight from the mouth of the person who received it. Dear God, did the kid learn anything throughout his short time there? I'm not even saying that the word for word definition of "consent" was something that should have been on the syllabus, but bullshitting your way around a question you don't know the answer to absolutely should have been. There was only one way for Derrick Rose to potentially not end up looking like a completely unintelligible buffoon in this situation, and he missed that life boat worse than Leonardo DiCaprio. C'mon Derrick, if someone asks you an easy question that you know you should know the answer to you don't just say "no", regardless of whether or not you're in a sworn deposition. The correct response is to act like what little intelligence you do have has just been insulted beyond repair. You don't have to know the meaning of elementary words to shame people into thinking you know the meaning to elementary words. Not understanding a term as basic as 'consent' when you've been embattled in a RAPE case for months on end is pretty stupid, but it's not nearly as stupid as not comprehending how bad that looks to anyone that has graduated 8th grade. It's not that I expected Derrick Rose to be someone who could crush a vocal test at any level, but I did expect him to realize that becoming offended is the best defense mechanism when you're trying to appear mildly literate. h/t Deadspin
