Former Saints Wide Receiver Josh Morgan Was Charged After Shooting Himself While Cleaning His Gun2/11/2016 Yahoo- Free-agent NFL wide receiver Josh Morgan accidentally shot himself late last month and was later charged with a crime, TMZ Sports reported Wednesday.
According to the report, police in Virginia responded Jan. 31 to a call that a man suffered a a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 9 p.m. ET. Morgan maintained that he was simply cleaning his gun when it accidentally went off. Morgan, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, has been charged with misdemeanor reckless use of a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in court in March. Morgan, 30, was selected by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft and went on to have stints with the Redskins and Bears. He was also signed by the Saints in May last offseason, but was released in September at final roster cuts before the start of the season. Well, what do you know, Josh Morgan finally caught something. Too bad it was an errant bullet instead of a football. I know what you are thinking. No, I didn't mean Josh Gordon. Hell, I didn't even mean Joe Morgan, and even though he exponentially more accomplished than Josh Morgan you likely don't know who that is either. That's why everyone should hold onto their Plaxico Burress jokes for now. Not only because they are far too easy to make, but because Josh Morgan doesn't deserve the comparison. When Plax shot himself in the leg -thus putting him behind bars for two years- he was one of the best wide receivers in the sport. A wide receiver that was coming off a Super Bowl victory in which he caught the game winning touchdown. He was on top of the sports world, and his conviction took him away from sports in the heart of his prime. Josh Morgan was just an unemployed camp body that apparently has an itchy trigger finger and a poor understanding of the safety button. Now I am not saying that Josh Morgan is less dumb for shooting himself than Plaxico Burress was. Shit, the guy put a bullet in his leg while cleaning a LOADED gun. Far be to for me to try to take a stand on behalf of his intelligence. I will say that this is not nearly as bad for Josh Morgan's career, and that's because he barely has a career. I was being nice by calling him a "former Saint", because he was cut before he ever played a meaningful game. One of the most shallow wide receiver pools in the entire league, and he couldn't even sniff a regular season snap. Josh Morgan's career is so irrelevant that most people will hear his name and confuse him for someone else. That's why this whole 'Chedda Bob' situation might actually be a good thing for him. Non-life-threatening injuries? Only charged with a misdemeanor? Sounds like he's almost ready to get back on the field, and now every front office in the NFL knows who he is. No publicity is bad publicity. Sometimes you just have to make a name for yourself. You know how many sub-par receivers that don't shoot themselves in the leg get noticed? ZERO. At the very least the decision makers in the NFL know that Josh Morgan exists, and that's more than you could say before he nearly killed himself by accident. Is he likely to get picked up after this incident? Probably not, but he DEFINITELY wasn't getting picked up prior to this incident. I am sure he is pretty familiar with the NFL inactive's list by now, and as I recall 'doubtful' is always more promising than 'out'.
