These German Twins Finished An Olympic Marathon Holding Hands And Some People Aren't Happy About It8/18/2016 LBS- German distance runners Anna and Lisa Hahner are being criticized by officials from their home country after they crossed the finish line at the end of their marathon race on Sunday while holding hands.
Anna and Lisa, who are twins, finished 81st and 82nd in the women’s marathon at the Summer Olympics in Rio. Anna was credited with a time of 2:45:32 and Lisa a second slower. Photos of their hand-holding finish went viral. “Victory and medals are not the only goal,” Thomas Kurschilgen, sports director of the German Athletics Federation, said in an email to The New York Times on Tuesday. “Still, every athlete in the Olympic competitions should be motivated to demonstrate his or her best performance and aim for the best possible result. “Their main aim was to generate media attention,” he said. “That is what we criticize.” Do I think the Hahner girls finished a marathon holding hands for media attention? You're goddamn right they did, and you know what? I don't even blame them. If you flew to Rio and ran 26.2 miles coming in 81st and 82nd place respectively you would use whatever tools were at your disposal to get some airtime too. That's a hell of a lot of running to get nothing more than a fictitious sense of fulfillment out of it. You think I'm letting that kind of physical exertion go under the radar? I am not even at liberty to say I wouldn't strip down to nothing but my bib number after traveling to a third world country and successfully completing an impressive athletic feat. Of course I would grab my hypothetical twin's hand and majestically skip across the finish line simultaneously. So they wanted to get a Kodak moment together that also had the potential to go viral, what of it? Why wouldn't they want to get all the likes, favorites, shares, and a frame worthy still shot to give to their Mother as a bullshit joint Christmas gift? That's just human nature as far as I am concerned. My only issue with it is that we are treating them as two separate people. Twins that look identical, dress identical, run identical, and share nearly identical times? They are basically the same fucking person. They should get one honorable mention medal. One spot on the leader board. One tracking number. They want to share the spotlight then they can share everything else too. You compromise the integrity of the race by intentionally finishing it together then you should be forced to compromise your individuality as well. Can't believe we wasted two places on these broads. How do you think the girl that finished in 100th feels knowing the only thing that kept her away from double digits was synchronized runners? How about the poor damsel distressed that she can't say she's top 100 in the world because of these sisters and their happy horseshit? She could have had a nice round number to brag about to her friends, and now she's going to be the butt of their jokes all because a couple of hot blondes from Germany decided they wanted to compete as one and count as two.
