GlobalNews- Police in Barrie locked up a teenager overnight for being constantly absent from class.
Police say an arrest warrant was issued last Tuesday under the Education Act. Police say the 16-year-old girl repeatedly skipped school and didn’t show up for her originally scheduled court date on the absences. Police say she was found on Friday and spent the night in jail before she appeared before a judge on Saturday. It’s mandatory in Ontario for those between the ages of six and 18 to attend school. This may come as a surprise, but I totally agree with locking up kids that are skipping school on a semi-frequent basis. Not because it's a prison worthy offense, but because it's the only way to deter kids from skipping school. School sucks. We all hated it. We all thought about just not going, and the only thing that stopped us from doing so wasn't the undying commitment to our education, but the punishments we would face for doing so. Well, each passing generation is pushing the envelope more and more. When I was in middle school it was frowned upon to hug in the halls, and now the only oral exam that kids take reflects their sexual proficiency and is callously graded by their peers. It won't be too long before a significant portion of kids just say "fuck it" and stop going. What's the worst that happens? Their parents ground them and sentence them to a week in their room with their iPhone, NetFlix, and no obligation to interact - in person - with the outside world? Yeah, that'll really force them to show up to learn about photosynthesis on a Wednesday morning. The youth of America isn't just as reckless as ever, but they are aware as ever. They know that a lot of the crap they are learning about has no real life application. That doesn't mean they should get to avoid it at their own discretion. Not when so many people before them had to suffer through that same fate. So yeah, it seems like an insane overreaction to imprison children for playing hooky, but kids are acting like entitled, autonomous adults and the only way to make them willingly go to school is to threaten them with something far worse.
