Assuming this guy wasn't actually fired for sexually assaulting an intern, let this story serve as a valuable lesson to everyone whose career requires that they appeal to the masses. Going above and beyond in the pursuit of entertainment can only work against you. If this dude truly got canned because people found this unorthodox tribute insensitive then I can't argue with this employer. This was insensitive...to everyone in Nashville that was trying to mourn the death of someone they had never met without having to worry about a smile creeping across their face while they did. It was obviously meant to serve as a show of respect to the works of a musical legend, but it was pretty clearly offensive to all those people out there that need to drain themselves of any and all crocodile tears before they feel remotely comfortable letting themselves laugh. As someone whose job it is to make sure he doesn't hurt any feelings, Dan Phillips should have known that spending an extra hour writing Prince puns into his broadcast could only cause him problems. Really hate to 'Purple Rain' on your pity party, but no one likes a try-hard Dan. Especially not a try-hard that doesn't understand that the only way you can truly memorialize someone's life is to solemnly report their death. Maybe next time you are covering the news on a channel like Fox you'll keep in mind that you aren't exactly playing to an audience with a liberal sense of humor. Trust me, it should really lighten your workload.
