A UCLA Frat Had A Kanye/Kim Themed Party Which Kind Of, Maybe Included Blackface

BSO- UCLA students are angry and embroiled in controversy after a fraternity hosted a Kanye West-themed western party, which reportedly turned racist and included some participants wearing blackface. 

The event, hosted by the Sigma Phi Epsilon frat and Alpha Phi sorority, had attendees dressed in baggy clothes, some with wore fake Kardashian themed big butts according to the L.A. Times.

The Afrikan Student Union is planning to meet at noon Thursday at the campus’ Bruin Bear statue to address what it described as a racial incident. The group is urging students to wear black.

“Yes that’s right, a frat decided it would be okay to have their members repeat a part of historythat demoralized, mocked and dehumanized African Americans/ And celebrate while doing it,” she wrote on Facebook. “They showed up with their chains and braids with stuffed butts for God knows what reason. True Bruin values amiright????!!!!! Not to mention all of this happened last night which happened to be a part of Black Bruin Welcome Week! Coincidence right??????”

Members of the black student union reportedly confronted fraternity members at the party, but got laughed at after asking for an apology.

Let's ignore the face that blackface is incredible offensive. Everyone knows that. Everyone knows there is nothing kosher about a bunch of frat guys and sorority gals smearing black paint on their face in an attempt to look like an African American. However, there is so much more wrong with this party than just white people, once again, having a hell of a time trying to understand race relations. My main issue with this party? The theme is fucking terrible. Is this what it's come to? Kanye West and Kim Kardashian inspired parties? Just what we needed, to incorporate the two most nauseating people in entertainment into our lives more. There's nothing sexy about KimYe parties. Keep it simple idiots. Throw a pajama party. Throw a 'Pros and Hoes' sports themed party. Take it wayyyy back and throw a fucking toga party. All of those parties offer so much more than a a bunch of girls stuffing fake butts into their pants, and guys throwing on the most obnoxious thing in their closets. These kids aren't just trivializing black culture, they are trivializing frat culture. They are making a mockery of every greek chapter that has come before them whose themes revolved around getting scantily clad women to show up to houses filled with dudes. The most offensive thing about this party to me, as a white male, is that it's at a frat house and college me wouldn't even entertain the thought of going. "Oh, theres a bunch of girls in overalls with charcoal on their face? Nah, I'm good. Isn't Kappa Beta having a lingerie party tonight?".  

P.S. I know I am only going off a few pictures, but it doesn't seem like there was all that much blackface at this party. The group of girls looking like they came from Ash Wednesday with a blind priest are VERY CLEARLY making an ill-received "Gold Digger" joke in which the debris on their faces would be from the coal mines. Then we have a girl with a drawn on beard. Then we have a girl with what looks to be a Kanye Presidential campaign endorsement written on her cheeks. These people may be tone deaf, but I don't think their racist. You want to say the are mocking black culture then you have an argument, but at this point Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are more popular culture than black culture. Plus, it look like there are some actual, real life black people AT this party. I think I am comfortable saying that this party sucks simply because it sucks, not because it's racist.
