Amanda Nunes Apologized For Being Mean To Ronda Rousey, And Somehow That Seems Even More Mean2/1/2017
Let me take a moment to explain myself. I was overwhelmed with adrenaline, emotion and hurt at the time. I held so much in during the weeks prior to my fight with Ronda. I might have said or posted some things at the time that I now realize was not the right thing to do. I want to apologize to Ronda. Her fans and mine and the UFC as well. Ronda is an amazing athlete and has done so much for this sport, especially for the women. #respect??
Hear me out, I have little to no doubt that Amanda Nunes' intentions were nothing but pure when she posted this Instagram. I'm certain she wishes she had better used the excess energy she had saved up for the two+ rounds that were deemed unnecessary by her opponent's inability to protect her neck and been more humble in the immediate aftermath of her flat out destruction of Ronda Rousey. I'm sure she does have a hell a lot of respect for the person that paved the way for her and the career that she put to an abrupt, embarrassing end, and you wouldn't have been able to tell that from her post-fight presser. Still, I can't help but think that this apology will have the undesired effect. Can you imagine going from being the most feared person in an occupation that's predicated on physical violence to being someone that doesn't appear to be able to handle the truth in just over a year's time? Amanda Nunes - as snarky and sarcastic as she was about it in the moment - is really just saying sorry for being completely honest. The criticisms she had of Rousey and her trainer weren't just fair; They were factual. It almost makes me think that Amanda Nunes woke up yesterday morning, read Dana White's pessimistic report of Ronda's lack of a future in fighting, realized she was probably about to slip back into a deep depression, and wanted to rid herself of the guilt of being the person that punched a submissive face so many times that it no longer wanted to be seen in public. This post may have been genuine in theory, but it reeks of pity in execution. I'm sure it was meant to give a once ferocious competitor some perspective, but if I had gotten my ass brutally beaten with millions of people watching then the last thing that would bring me peace of mind is being reminded of it by the person responsible for it. P.S. Ronda Rousey was just in the news after applying for a concealed carry permit, so maybe Amanda Nunes' decision to make amends was slightly influenced by a certain Adam Sandler movie...
