Metro- Jamie Gilt, 31, was taken to hospital after the four-year-old found her loaded pistol in the back seat of her truck as she drove through Putnam County, Florida. The little boy then pointed the .45 semi-automatic handgun at his mother and pulled the trigger, firing a round through the car seat and into his mother’s back. Gilt survived the blast and was able to flag down a sheriff’s deputy who took her to hospital. The sheriff found the .45 gun on the floor of the car and said they were satisfied the gun had definitely been fired inside the vehicle. Putman County Sheriff’s office spokesman Joseph Wells said: ‘As the deputy slowed to check on the vehicle, he observed an adult female in the driver’s seat motioning to him as if she needed assistance. You could say that this incident called into question the legitimacy of Jamie Gilt's stance on gun control. You could say that her getting shot in the back by her own son is a sign that allowing people to openly carry firearms isn't a good way to cut down on violence. You could say that the NRA could probably do better as far as spokespeople go. What you can't say is that owning a gun didn't protect her child. She might be laid up in a hospital bed, but that little boy is as safe as can be, and that's really the only reason she needed it in the first place. Fuck your fear of her guns because her guns keep her son locked and loaded at all times. Surely she didn't expect to end up in the crosshairs of the loose handgun that was casually bouncing around her backseat, but having children is all about sacrifice. She put her own life at risk in order to maintain the health of her son, and I think we can all respect that level of selflessness. Do I think Jamie Gilt is smart? No. Do I think she is a good parent? Ditto. Do I think she will take a bullet for her offspring? No again, but that's only because I KNOW she will. So let her exercise her right to protect her child, because if it means she inevitably ends up dead sooner rather than later then everyone - including her son - will be better off because of it. Her biggest mistake was going to the hospital, because losing her undying support to a bullet would have been addition by subtraction for her cause.
