TheSportingNews- With 3:29 left in the first quarter, linebacker A.J. Klein caught a pass that had ricocheted off the hands of Ravens tight end Darren Waller, and raced up the sideline untouched for what seemed to be a 95-yard touchdown. Flags flew in the middle of the run, however.
It was for too many men on the field — the extra man being Newton, who had run off the opposite sideline in celebration while Klein was still in mid-return. Newton had already played his one series, leading the Panthers to a field goal, and had been replaced by Derek Anderson. "I just got too excited,'' Newton said afterward, adding, "I was hoping (the officials) would give a warning. But, it's not a big deal." The touchdown was called back, and the Panthers were penalized 5 yards from where Newton had entered the field of play, spotting the ball at the Ravens' 26. And we're back! I know it's just been a couple of preseason games, but nothing marks the start of a football season quite like a story that's not remotely controversial, but will be viewed as such because the main character is Cam Newton. Costing his team points by coming onto the field as he excessively celebrates the success of a teammate? That could be viewed in so many different ways that it's almost like Cam Newton did it on purpose to get everyone's gears in game shape so that their opinions were in mid-season form by the time September 8th hits. Was he being arrogant or having fun? Was he selfish or selfless? Is the ref just strict or is he racist? I don't know answers, but I do know the asking of the questions means it's time for everyone to break out their Cam Newton soap boxes. This is what football season is all about! The brisk autumn breeze, the week-to-week schizophrenia, the inevitable boost in caloric intake, binge drinking on Sunday until you forget Monday is on the horizon, pretending people care about your fantasy team, and arguing whether or not Cam Newton is a dickhead until your eyes roll back in your head. I don't know whether or not his decision to remind us of that was noble or narcissistic, but I do know that we'll have plenty of time to bitch about it until the season officially kicks off!
