Reuters- Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc's new GMO-free menu claims have lured diners and boosted the burrito chain's stock price, but it has some consumers crying foul.
A California woman has accused the popular chain in a lawsuit of false advertising after it trumpeted on April 27 that it was the first national restaurant company to use only ingredients that are free of controversial genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. In her lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in San Francisco, the plaintiff Colleen Gallagher also alleged that Chipotle violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act because its food labeling is false and misleading, and deceived diners into paying more for their food. "As Chipotle told consumers it was 'G-M-Over it,' the opposite was true," the Piedmont, California resident said. "In fact, Chipotle's menu as never been at any time free of GMOs." Chipotle's website carries disclaimers about the GMO content in its food. Those disclaimers say that "most animal feed in the U.S. is genetically modified, which means that the meat and dairy served at Chipotle are likely to come from animals given at least some GMO feed." They add that "many of the beverages sold in our restaurants contain genetically modified ingredients." This opinion may be met with a little bit of contempt, but I am actually not all that mad at this woman for suing Chipotle. That's just a product of the society that we live in. I'm usually not a fan of frivolous lawsuits, but when Chipotle makes it this easy you'd be an idiot not to try to take them for all their worth. Of course Chipotle isn't completely GMO free. We are talking about a a fucking fast food burrito joint that turns out like 10 meals per minute. Color me shocked that they don't serve the healthiest food on the planet. Just because they work in an organized assembly line and do so with a smile on their face doesn't mean they are scouring the coup looking for the purest of chickens. I don't even know why they tried to go with the anti-GMO slogan. I guess to trick people into thinking they were eating healthy? Grab those fat bags of shit off the street that thought they could lose weight by eating fucking BURRITOS. Yeah, that sounds about right. Maybe I should start drinking more too. After all, thin blood, thin waistline. Joke aside, slapping some bullshit slogan about health on the front of your restaurant is actually a pretty bulletproof business plan. You just have to realize that when you're as popular as Chipotle it leaves you pretty vulnerable to false advertisement accusations. If I were Chipotle I would change my slogan to 'Kinda G-M-Over It'. That's all i expect anyway. Really that's all anyone should expect. When I am eating out I just want the dining establishment to pretend to care that they are health conscious. That way I can pretend to care about my health when I eat it. If we were all really concerned about what we put in our bodies we would never eat at places where they shovel meat out of an uncovered bucket. We would do all our grocery shopping at Whole Foods, read the nutritional facts of every single product before we bought it, and cook all of our own meals. Do we do that? Fuck no we don't. You know why? Because Chipotle tastes better. You know why Chipotle tastes better? Because it's worse for you. Not the most complicated concept to grasp. So no, I don't hate this woman for trying to get a bunch of unearned money. That's just the American way now-a-days. However, I do hate people that think restaurants have some kind of moral responsibility to make sure that you aren't a GMO riddled tub of shit. The next fast food slogan I put the entirety of my faith in will be the first fast food slogan I put the entirety of my faith in, so maybe mix in a salad (light on the dressing fatty) before you go screaming about Chipotle's lack of integrity. Plus, if we are going to start throwing indefensible allegations Chipotle's way then we need to start with their criminal price tag for a scoop of guac.
