TIME-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie thinks the media circus over New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady potentially knowing that his team’s footballs were a little light on air is, frankly, “way, way overblown.”
“I don’t think anybody is really trying to say that Tom Brady won four super bowls or became a future Hall of Famer because the balls were a little under inflated,” Christie, a noted Cowboys fan, told IJ Review in an interview on Thursday in New Hampshire. “I think the media and others love for somebody who is married to a beautiful model, who is richer than you can imagine and who is a future Hall of Famer, to take a couple of shots at him? People like that every once in a while.” Christie’s comments come one day after an NFL investigation found it was “more probable than not” that Brady was at least “generally aware” about team employees tampering with footballs. When it comes to politics there are three types of people. There are the people that don't care at all. There are the people that know every detail of the campaigns. Then there are the people that genuinely think they care. Chris Christie saying that DeflateGate is being overblown, which it undoubtedly is, is only going to spark a reaction from that third group. A lot of people think that 'talking politics' simply means 'talking about a politician'. For instance, look at the people that HATE Chris Christie. First, you have each and every teacher, because he has basically laid his FUPA on their head and pissed down their neck. That's valid. Then you have the group of people that that are staunch liberals. Also valid. However, you know what garnered the most negative publicity during Christie's run (other than his handling of Hurricane Sandy funds)? It's when he went to a fucking football game and sat in the owner's box in Dallas. People flat out up in arms because a Jersey boy was a Cowboys fan. Thousands of people storming the State House with lit torches. Okay, maybe it was just thousands and thousands of people angrily mashing their keyboard on Facebook and twitter, but my point remains. If Chris Christie released this statement about DeflateGate yesterday, then did a major tax reform, increased every toll in the state and then started a forest fire the biggest news of the day would still be that Chris Christie loves cheaters. Now I don't support Chris Christie. Truth be told I could take him or leave him. I do love his propensity to not give a fuck what people think. Pretty sure his belt size speaks exactly to that. So his tendency to say what he thinks, combined with everyone else's tendency to overreact to literally EVERYTHING he says, is quite the volatile mixture. That's all political debate is now. What has your least favorite politician done that you could spin into a negative, even if it has nothing to do with politics. Not voting for a man because he flew out to Dallas on a Sunday for a football game, or because he thinks that a quarter ounce of air pressure doesn't deserve 8 months of coverage is just as stupid as voting for Hillary solely because she is a woman. Unfortunately, both are very likely to happen. I don't know politics, so I don't talk politics. At the very least I can say I am self aware, unlike most of the people babbling incoherently about Obama, or Christie, or any other rich, corrupt bastard in a position of power.
