Cops Aren't Really Upset By The Prius Commercial, Are They?

TMZ- That Prius Super Bowl commercial rubbed cops the wrong way -- not because it made high speed chases look like good, clean fun ... but because it's a big fat lie!

Several law enforcement sources tell us the Prius spot was hysterically unrealistic. One source said, "Loved it, funny as hell ... like a Prius is going to outrun anything."

Other reviews included:
- "overdone"
- "silly"
- "you can't outrun a helicopter"

They've got a point. The new Prius 4 tops out around 105 mph, while a police cruiser can do at least 120 mph -- and their 0-60 times are a laughable 10.5 seconds compared to 6 flat.

Now, a few sources were concerned about the ad's overall message, saying ... "I had to tell my kids running from cops is a bad thing." But the overall take on Prius' attempt to look worthy of a felony -- "goobery and dumb."

Look, obviously I'm not saying that most officers can't see the humor in a commercial featuring four bumbling idiots in an electric hybrid outwitting countless cop cars and a police helicopter. However, I do find it rather funny that there are members of law enforcement out there whose immediate reaction was to defend their own ability to wrangle a fucking Prius. You really have to be some kind of asshole to feel so threatened by a Super Bowl ad -that was CLEARLY exaggerated- that your first instinct was to jump on the defensive.

Overdone? What gave it away? The thieves running out of the bank in pink ski masks that weren't even covering their faces? 'Apache' as the "dramatic" background music? The people standing on the bridge with signs rooting on a getaway vehicle? That all seemed so feasible to me. Between this commercial and my extensive history playing 'Grand Theft Auto' as a child I would think it's almost certainly possible to outrun a helicopter. Thank God some overly critical, stick-in-the-mud police officer was questioned on the authenticity of this Super Bowl ad or I might have stolen an environmentally friendly motor vehicle this afternoon just for the hell of it. I mean, why wouldn't I? It seemed like so much fun on TV.

Seriously though, if you have to explain to your child that running from the cops is a bad thing then your kid was probably going to prison at some point anyway. Hell, you should probably be jailed as well for being an awful parent. The "overall message" of that ad was that upbeat music combined with  a comedic car chase draws eyeballs that might subconsciously convince their owner that a Prius is a wise investment. If we start treating commercials like they are public service announcements then we are going to have a hell of a lot more problems than a couple butt hurt cops.

P.S. Also saw people trying to turn this into a race issue, and those people are the only people that are more obnoxiously unbearable than a bunch of cops that treated a satirical advertisement as disrespectful to their authority.

LIKE A PRIUS IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING BETTER THEN A FORD CROWN VICTORIA PI EXCEPT MAYBE PASS A GAS STATION. ONLY CRIMINALS ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO TRY TO OUT RUN LAW ENFORCEMENT IN A PRIUS.
