LBS- Brees tied an NFL single-game record by throwing seven touchdowns and set a career-high with 511 yards through the air. On the other side, Eli Manning threw for 350 yards and six touchdowns. Three of those scores were caught by Odell Beckham Jr. and that made Brees’ son Baylen pretty happy.
“Here was the problem with yesterday’s game. My sons go to [Isidore] Newman School, which is where Eli Manning and Odell Beckham went to high school,” Brees said on The Dan Patrick Show, via ESPN. “So my oldest one decided that he was gonna cheer for Odell Beckham and Eli Manning during the game. And Eli goes and throws six touchdowns and Odell scores three.” “Now he wants an Odell Beckham jersey, so we’re having to contemplate this decision,” said Brees. Here's the thing, I don't see this as a problem. Don't get me wrong, if I were Drew Brees I would want all my children rooting for me as well. I would certainly be annoyed if one of them, especially the oldest, decided not to. I would be even more pissed if the two players he was rooting for, Eli Manning and Odell Beckham, connected for three touchdowns against my team. However, the beauty of this is that none of that mattered. Drew Brees put his name in the record books (for like the 100th time). He threw SEVEN touchdowns. He made his opposition's super human performances look mortal. Beckham's three? Yawn. Manning's six? Child's play. All Sunday symbolizes is a historic win for the Saints. Nothing more, nothing less. If I were Drew I would encourage Baylen to root for the Giants. Football players are creatures of habit and superstition. In games where his oldest son is rooting for Eli and Odell the Saints offense is unstoppable. I'm talking like 2009, 2011, "we are going to score every time we touch the ball", elite level unstoppable. That's easily the best Drew Brees has looked all season. Maybe Baylen rooting for the Giants had something to do with that. Maybe it didn't. Who knows? All I know is that Baylen needs to remain a die hard Giants fan until we find the fuck out. If that conflict of interest has to arise again then it means the Saints miraculously made the playoffs. If that comes to fruition then Baylen's "Giants phase" won't be the only magic we are talking about because the Saints will have pulled a rabbit directly out of their ass. So buy that little shit an Odell jersey Drew. I remember when I first started going to Devils games and I was convinced I was a Penguins fan for like a month. Then I realized I wasn't and I felt pretty damn silly about it. I can promise it wasn't nearly as silly as Baylen will feel when he realizes how important, accomplished, and celebrated his Dad is in New Orleans. I can promise it wasn't as silly as Baylen will feel when he realizes he is a part of some of the most iconic moments in Saints history. He's a Who Dat for life whether he likes it or not. One day he's going to feel pretty dumb that he chose to be on the wrong side of history that one November day, and hopefully by then he'll be old enough to make fun of about it...
