FTW- “Just that I’m playing year to year, and creating a sense of urgency each year because I want to come here with the Vince Lombardi trophy again. I want to make that commitment to you. I want to come back here with that Vince Lombardi trophy just like we did almost nine years ago.”
“No, I don’t plan on going anywhere for a while, but I do also want to value each and every year, and it doesn’t really matter what my contract looks like to me, whether it’s long term or short term, because to me, I have to prove myself each and every year, prove that I’m the guy to quarterback that team and to lead that team and to help us win a championship. “Eventually, I just want to go out on my terms, and when I do, it’s just gonna be to step into the next chapter of my life, which is gonna be all about my family and coaching my kids. I get to be full-time job.” Whoa. A Vince Lombardi name drop, an utterance of the word "commitment", and a "trust me" grab of his good friend's hand? I know saying it's all but a guarantee that a 37 year old whose team is coming off three consecutive sub-.500 seasons is going to bring another Super Bowl back to New Orleans prior to retirement is a risky proposition, but are you going to be the one to question Drew Brees' assurance to his favorite daytime television host? Pretty sure we are talking about a guy that has followed through on every single promise he has ever made on Ellen's show so I don't see why he would stop now. Those other 31 teams probably think they'll have something to say about it, but they are merely footnotes to one of the most genuine athletes of all time staying true to his word. Do I know whether or not I'll once again get to see Drew Brees' standing on that podium tugging on America's heartstrings by holding one of however many children he has by then up in the air as confetti comes pouring down thus creating a timeless snapshot for the ages? I can't say that I do, but I feel a whole hell of a lot more confident now that there is a psuedo-obligation to the woman that has made hundreds of thousands of housewives lifelong Drew Brees' fans attached. P.S. Preach Ellen, Preach... “Well good, I’m glad to hear that you’re not going anywhere. That scared me that your contract is up, and you are the guy to quarterback that team. You just need a little more help with some other people.” Drew laughed and said no, it’s a team game and he needs to do better, while Ellen shot back, “So do they.”
