Fox- "You're always sensitive to anything throughout the world," he said. "I'm not thinking about nothing like that. I'm thinking about what I need to do before every game that I prepare for and have been doing my whole career. I understand whatever's said from that standpoint, but I'm not a disrespectful person. If anybody thinks I'm being disrespectful to their country, then they have no idea who Dwyane Wade is.
"No disrespect from myself or Amar'e (Stoudemire) or anybody. If anybody feels like it was, please don't fill up my timeline with disrespectful comments, because that's not this guy right here. Find somebody else with that."
I can't, in good conscience, try to act like I was upset by Dwyane Wade tossing up fadeaways while the Canadian National Anthem was being played. I can, however, tell you that I am offended by his lack of forthcomingness. I'll take his word for it. I don't personally know D-Wade, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when he says he's not a disrespectful person. That doesn't mean that he wasn't disrespectful in that particular moment. Dwayne Wade valued his pregame routine of finishing his warm-up with a made shot over acknowledging the country his opposition represented. I know that because right as this clip ends you see him take one step towards doing the right thing, and then the ball rims out and he immediately turns back to Amare for a pass. That's fine. I don't care if his superstitions are that important to him during the playoffs. He just has to take responsibility when his completion of them makes him look like a complete dick. He can't talk to us like we are the assholes when he was the one completely ignoring the fact that literally everyone else around him had come to a standstill.
He wasn't so focused that he didn't realize what was happening. He wasn't too far "in the zone". Unless deafness is his next injury concern then he knew very well what he was up to. He just wanted to watch the ball go through the hoop one last time before tip-off, and he was willing to blow off an ode to our Northern neighbor to do so. There's a reason that you have never seen Dwyane Wade working on his 'J' during 'The Star Spangled Banner', and it's not because this was all just a huge coincidence. It's because Dwyane Wade would never disrespect his home country like that. It's just Toronto so it's no skin off my ass, but if we drop our American narcissism for one second it's not too difficult to envision how pissed everyone would be if the shoe were on the other foot here. Doesn't mean I think less of Dwyane Wade, I just think he deserves every derogatory mention on his timeline.
