Annnnd - as with most things NHL related - I now find myself baffled by something I was pretty sure I had a solid grasp of. You see, I thought Mike Milbury was self aware of his own stupidity. I thought NBC Sports was complicit in enabling that stupidity on their broadcast just to drum up conversation (more accurately, outrage). I mean, why else employ a casually racist moron that encourages unnecessary acts of violence that fall outside the framework of the sport that he failed his way out of unless you're doing so in the undying, oft-disingenuous search for clicks and controversy? I honestly don't have a good answer to that rhetorical question, because if NBC Sports wanted the attention then they would have no problem with the presence of topical, funny signs that simply regurgitated the words of a person that they willingly pay to spout the exact same nonsense. If they are so against fan engagement - negative or otherwise - then why hire the guy that offers literally nothing other than an objectionable personality that hockey fans can uniformly despise? Never mind the fact that offering cheap paraphernalia that's useless to anyone that doesn't spend every Saturday during the summer mowing the lawn is insulting, because it's not as insulting as a cable television network endorsing senseless jackassery but trying to censor the harmless reactions to it. βIt's not like anyone was going to think that Mike Milbury's contract was in desperate need of termination because they saw a sign cleverly stating so. Literally everyone has known for years that he's a complete joke, so finding out the company that signs his checks might not actually be in on it leaves me truly stupefied.
