TMZ- Robert Griffin III is telling friends ... his wife was NOT blindsided by his decision to pursue a divorce -- insisting their marriage has been on the rocks for two years.
But it begs the question ... why would the couple then buy a house TOGETHER in April? As we previously reported RG3's wife, Rebecca Liddicoat, was devastated over a Cleveland.com report that Griffin was in the process of filing for divorce ... and has told people she was "blindsided." One source extremely close to the QB tells us, "They have been working on their marriage for the past 2 years. Things didn't get better. They have been separated since January." "All he cares about is being a great father to his daughter moving forward." But TMZ Sports has learned ... Robert and Rebecca bought a house together in April. And according to the deed, filed on April 14th with the recorder's office, it includes BOTH of their names. I'm not going to be too hard on RG3 and his now estranged wife for taking a comically large leap while in a relationship that clearly had the legs of a newborn deer. Doing something drastic that temporarily makes your life seem stable because your supposed everlasting partnership is the farthest thing from it is a practice as old matrimony itself. That's why the only criticism from me is that Rebecca didn't do a good enough job of strong arming her husband into staying with her. A house? That's the best you could do to try to trap a starting NFL quarterback into a loveless marriage? I know RG3 has often looked like a soon-to-be-out-of-work bum, but those checks are still being signed by Roger Goodell. A fairly substantial financial investment is something that cements your average 9-5 worker into a hate filled existence paired up with someone he resents, not a professional football player. You want him to stick around then you better make sure that those bargaining chips need their diapers changed. That's right, if she had gone off that birth control and gotten herself knocked up again then I'd be willing to bet that RG3 wouldn't ALREADY have his new girlfriend's name tattooed on his arm. It takes YEARS to make a house feel like a home, but it only takes a couple pounds of baby weight to make a pending addition to the family feel like an anchor. I know they already have a one year old so he's pretty much immune to the wide eyed innocence of a child, but everyone knows you can't separate from a woman mid-pregnancy. If Rebecca was truly committed to making RG3 miserable for the rest of his life she would have made sure to plant a new seed every year, not depended on the sanctity of a new home that had barely been broken in yet. ::CoughUpgradeCough::
