HockeyInsiders- Rivalries in sports can get very heated, but they should never lead to physical violence or the loss of life. A sad story has come out of Philadelphia this morning as a young man was apparently stabbed to death for being a Flyers fan.

A 25-year-old male, who was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with friends, in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood was approached by an African American male who was wearing a New Jersey Devils hat around 3 am Sunday morning. The victim was asked he is was a Flyers fan and then was attacked when he was stabbed in the stomach and pronounced dead at a local area hospital.

The Rittenhouse Square area is known to be a safe neighborhood, in fact a few members of the Flyers live right down the street from where the attack took place.

Guess what sports fans? Rivalries still exist, and I don't even think we needed the NHL to implement a silly new playoff format to prove it. We just needed the blood of the Flyers faithful to hit the pavement and show everyone that people still do hate others for their sports affiliation. Everyone likes to say that the Devils don't have fans, but guess whose laughing now? I'll tell you who's not laughing, the guy laying dead in the streets of Rittenhouse Square. Not only do the Devils have fans, but they black fans AND fans that are willing to murder on account of their allegiance. They might not fill the building on a nightly basis, but that's just because they are out committing vigilante justice on behalf their favorite hockey team. Nothing says "die-hard" like wearing a team's hat as you savagely commit homicide against a member of a rival hockey club's fanbase.

And spare me the "oh, it's so sad that an innocent man was murdered" spiel. Innocent people get stabbed to death everyday and I don't give a shit about them either. I'd go as far as saying that someone that was STILL out at 3AM during a St. Patty's celebration got what was coming to him. No one lasts that long after day drinking. If this kid was carelessly pounding Guinness and Jameson like an adult then he would still be alive. He would be nursing the second day of a MASSIVE hangover, but he would still be alive. Even if we was technically innocent, something tells me the dude walking around in the middle of the night wielding a weapon was going to stab someone for a shitty reason regardless. If your going to senselessly kill someone with next to no justification then it might as well be a Flyers fan. There's not a fanbase in sports where you would have a higher percentage of randomly stabbing someone that deserved to get stabbed. It's not like he shanked him in the back. He got him right in the stomach. I thought Flyers fans were supposed to be rough around the edges? Little thing I learned from the Wu-Tang Clan, ALWAYS protect ya neck. Either that or get Broad Street Bullied on your own turf. Sorry Flyers fan, you're the ones that continue to push that narrative, it's about time it cost you more than a remote chance at winning the Stanley Cup.

P.S. But seriously, I don't care what words were exchanged, treating this like it was fan-on-fan crime at THREE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING DURING A ST. PATRICK'S DAY BAR CRAWL ON A DAY THAT THE DEVILS AND FLYERS WERE PLAYING ON OPPOSITE COASTS is absolute fuckin' lunacy. You want me to care about a fan losing his life? Let me know when it happens in Section 231 during overtime of Game 7.

Unbeknownst to you I was born on the first floor of the hospital so she's very much alive and well, and also - shockingly - she doesn't spend her late nights wandering the streets of Pennsylvania after a St. Patty's bar crawl.
