Well, there's only one word to describe these responses to a newspaper column that congratulated Cam Newton and his girlfriend on the birth of their child. Predictable. In fact, we should be proud of the old white people that wrote in to chastise Cam Newton for fathering a child out of wedlock. Finally they found a criticism that was only subtly racist. Look at the South progressing right before our very eyes!
Whatever we do can we not treat this like it's an actual belief that a large demographic of society holds? Just let the old people die off and this mindset will die off right along with them. I feel like the last time some crotchety old white broad wrote a letter every news outlet had to hold a segment on whether or not black quarterbacks should be allowed to dance in the end zone. Can we not do that again? This is exactly what it looks like. A couple of senior citizens not understanding the era in which they live in. That's why they still read the NEWSPAPER, never mind write into it, in the first place. Patricia Brodrick doesn't understand the modern day dynamics of a family. She was married with three kids before she could even drink legally, and the drinking age in her day was 18. That's just how people did things in the 1800's. I couldn't be more certain that an unexpected pregnancy forced Thomas Uhl into an unwanted marriage. An unhappy marriage that he is probably still in to this day because old people were too damn stubborn to get divorced. Do I know if Cam Newton is going to be a good Dad? No, I can't say that I do. I can, however, say that his proficiency as a father will have next to nothing to do with whether or not him and his girlfriend sign some piece of paper that contractual binds them forever. There are plenty of good single/non-married parents out there, and saying that a quarterback who happens to have a child with his girlfriend instead of his wife lacks "high morals" or "family principles" is a slap in the face to all of them.
