Metro- A mother has said her daughter’s human rights have been breached because she was sent home over her leopard-print hairstyle. Lauren McDowell, 13, had her hair shaved on once side and had it dyed brown and blonde.
‘As far as I’m concerned it’s a breach of my daughter’s human rights. She had the hair cut about a week before she went back to school. No one has the right to tell someone what to do with their body. It is her body. She is my child and not theirs. She didn’t sign away her rights when she started at school. The school says they encourage children as individuals but this is not supporting her. Lauren has a life outside of school.' She added that she won’t be having her hair cut. ‘Lauren was bullied at school and it has taken her a while to build up her confidence. She is devastated. She loves school. She is not a bad pupil. She works hard. What has her hair got to do with her education? I have explained to the school that I can understand its uniform policy and I totally agree with it but you cannot tell anyone how their hair should be styled. They are discriminating against her because of how she looks. She has the right to express herself in whatever way she wants as long as she is in school uniform. They are refusing my child an education. She was in school wanting to learn.’ Headteacher Dale Barrowclough said the school has a ‘very clear uniform policy’. He said: ‘This policy is communicated to parent frequently and is available to download from our website. The policy clearly states that extreme haircuts, including hair colour are not allowed. ‘A pupil arrived at school with a ‘leopard skin hair colour’ style. I took the decision to send the pupil home in order to remedy this breach of the school’s uniform policy.’ I am going to be honest, this girl never stood a chance. As soon as I saw this picture there wasn't a chance in hell I was going to take her side. This story could have been about her wandering into the woods and getting gang raped by a pack of cheetahs and I would have been more pro-cheetah than a fucking zookeeper. Hey lady, you sent your kid to private school. If you wanted her to dress and look however she wanted how come you paid for her to go to a school that had a dress code? I went to private school, and while I never had a leopard print haircut, I was well aware that it would have been a pretty big problem if I did. I didn't need to read the school manual to realize that a place that makes it's students wear suit jackets wouldn't allow their students to dye half their head like a predatory animal. And you know what? Maybe it's good that your daughter is getting an education at a place that won't let her be herself, because it's pretty fucking apparent that "herself" just happens to be synonymous with "asshole". Make no mistake, that's an asshole haircut. A haircut that's meant to say "fuck you, I don't care what you think". You know how I know that? Because there isn't a single, solitary female on this planet that is going to sincerely ask her where she got her hair done, and everyone knows that is the mark of a legitimate women's haircut. Your kid looks like a fucking idiot. She deals with bullying because not only did you let her look like an idiot, but you are fighting for her right to look like an idiot. Let's save the term discrimination for important things like race, religion, or gender. Making someone follow the rules isn't discrimination. If that were the case I would be able to head another civil rights movement based solely on all the times I was turned away from a club for being underdressed. Shit, even if it wasn't a rule, telling a girl to fix her hair because it looks like a toddler crawled into her bed with a buzzer and a black magic marker while she was sleeping shouldn't be considered discrimination. It should be considered a favor. While they probably won't succeed, this school is doing it's damnedest so that your daughter won't be a social awkward drug addict or serial killer by the time high school hits. Isn't that why you paid so much for her to go there? So they could tell your child "no" like you have so valiantly failed to do for the last 13 years? If all you wanted was your kid to do whatever the fuck she wanted and graduate you could have just sent her to public school. At least then you could afford to hire a professional to draw a bunch of lowercase letters on the side of your daughter's stupid fucking head.
