Yahoo- Summitt's indiscretion indelibly tarnishes a name that until now stood for only determination, grace and success. Pat Summitt won eight national titles and 16 SEC championships in 38 seasons at Tennessee before stepping down in 2012 due to early-onset Alzheimer's and dementia. First and foremost, the Summitt name ensured the type of national publicity elusive in women's basketball and even more rare at Louisiana Tech. Everyone from ESPN, to USA Today, to Yahoo Sports, to Sports Illustrated penned stories about Summitt during his tenure even though his first two seasons coaching the Lady Techsters produced a combined record of just 30-31. Turns out his immaturity was more of a weakness than he thought it was. As a result, he tarnished his family name, embarrassed the school that hired him and made landing a head coaching job far more challenging for the next wave of 20-something up-and-comers. I'll say this, it's a little disingenuous that we are criticizing Tyler Summitt for fucking his player when it's very clear his mother was burping him during that game plan. How is a 25 year old kid supposed to know where he can and can't put his dick if his mother doesn't have him facing forward in one of those infant chest carriers. I am of the firm belief that none of this is Pat Summitt's fault, but she could have done a better job there. All in seriousness, Tyler Summitt completely ruined his reputation. He might as well retire now and sit on whatever inheritance his mom is leaving him, because he is most definitely not working in basketball ever again. He's not getting that scarlet letter off no matter how many baby wipes he uses. That being said, isn't that enough? Isn't the guy having a bad enough day/week that we can stop short of holding him responsible for tarnishing his mother's legendary legacy while she's suffering from early on-set dementia? I feel like that's a pretty big load for a 25 year old - albeit a married one - to carry when he merely fucked the equivalent of an inferior "employee". Not saying he shouldn't have to face the consequences of his actions, but it's still something that's pretty common in like 90% of workplaces in America. I don't think raw dogging his sexy shooting guard and failing to pull out is grounds for wiping away his mother's EIGHT National Championships. At the very most I would say that having a son that has no sexual will power is a one National Championship penalty. When did society become incapable of judging two different people that happen to be in the same immediate family? Now you don't only have to worry about yourself, but also everyone that you happen to eat Thanksgiving dinner with? All the sudden we are going to downplay Pat Summitt's accomplishments, because her son - who by all accounts was raised right - couldn't keep his dick in his pants? Fuck no, that's the stupidest goddamn thing I have ever heard. He's a grown ass man that made his own grown ass decision. This isn't on Pat Summitt. This doesn't ruin HER family name. There's nothing she could have done during his childhood that would have stopped him from cheating on his wife and letting his swim team take a lap, so there's nothing he can do - after the age of 18 anyway - that is going to reflect poorly on her prolonged success. The kid fucked up BADLY, but he didn't fuck up badly enough to the point that we won't associate the last name 'Summitt' with women's basketball greatness. This right here is a fact....1,098 wins >1 sex scandal. P.S. Tyler Summitt's actions are going to make it harder for 20-something's to get jobs in women's basketball, and that's a GOOD thing, because it was only a matter of time before something like the happened.
