There's only one thing that sucks more than taking responsibility for your actions, and it's taking responsibility for the actions of inanimate objects. Take it from someone that's looked closely at the blade of his hockey stick far too many times after shooting a puck out of play, nothing makes you appear dumber than pointing fingers at something that can't even defend itself. That's why I couldn't feel worse for this keeper who whiffed on what ended up being the game winning goal as badly as anyone has ever whiffed on anything. There's just no doubt he's the one that is going to have to shoulder the blame for one of the most comedically dramatic bad bounces in sports history. You even saw him start to point to the field for a half second before he realized how stupid he looked. He knows he has a legitimate gripe that the field wasn't properly maintained or that the ball defied the laws of physics, but he also knows that when fans need a target for their irrationally hateful criticism then something that doesn't have feelings that can be hurt simply isn't going to cut it. It's like we - as people far too invested in a kid's game - can't get over the loss of that kid's game unless we know it's still eating at the insides of someone whose actions were even mildly culpable for the loss of said kid's game. Sure, in retrospect you could say that he should have played things safer. He should have tried to stop the ball with his foot instead of trying to boot it to Jupiter. He should have scooped it up with his hands instead of trying to catch the opposition in transition. He should have done anything other than let it casually skip over his foot as he swung his leg so violently it would make an MMA fighter wince. Well, hindsight - much like the eyes on that adventurous soccer ball - is 20/20, but overly emotional fans are blind to unforeseen circumstances.
