Uproxx- Wilson: “I couldn’t tell you any players on the Russian team. It’s probably a good thing that I don’t know any of their players.”
Reporter: “Why is that a good thing?” Wilson: “Because I don’t know them! Do you know any of the Russian players? Do you? No! I’m the same I’m in the same boat I’ve never seen them play before.” Reporter: “Are you going to do some research?” Wilson: “No, I’m not. We play with our team and that’s who I’m going to trust. I’m going to trust our team to go out there and get the job done.” ...And we wonder why the rest of the world hates us. It doesn't get anymore American then not paying anyone else mind and focusing solely on your own qualities. If Ron Wilson was being sarcastic here then he really needs to work on his sarcasm, because it fell on deaf ears, even for someone like me that speaks it fluently. Even still, satirical or not, probably not the smartest move to hang up Russia's billboard material for them. This wasn't exactly 'Miracle On Ice: Russia's Revenge'. The United States may have been favored to win, but it certainly wasn't heavily. This is the World Juniors we are talking about. I know that we, as a country, have a hard admitting that were not the best at something, but when it comes to hockey and soccer we should probably always do the necessary film study. Ron Wilson should have saved this line for the World Basketball Championships, because when it comes to playing some puck we should always embrace the role of the underdog. I don't want to be too hypocritical here. If Team USA had won and were headed into the finals then I would be standing on my roof with our country's flag draped upon my shoulders applauding Ron Wilson's moxie and bravado. Alas, they did not, so I am going to sit here and call him an arrogant dickhead. That's just how things go when you try to not only beat your competition, but embarrass them. It's like when boxers intentionally let their guard down and challenge their opponent to hit them. It's impressive if they can get away with it, but goddamn it do they look stupid when they catch a crippling right across the jaw. Bottomline? You want to be a cocky asshole then it's probably best to be a cocky asshole that's actually prepared, not a cocky asshole that's betting on his team's skill level without fulfilling the entirety of his job requirements. I doubt that Ron Wilson was just winging it, but I don't doubt that he didn't take a game, that his team ended up losing, anywhere close to serious enough.
