Uproxx- Westbrook was recently asked about comments Durant made where he called the Golden State Warriors players “selfless” and that they “enjoy the game in its purest form.” Russ responded in perfectly-executed Russ fashion:
“That’s cute, man,” Westbrook said. “That’s cute. My job is to worry about what’s going on here, and we’re gonna worry about all the selfish guys we have here apparently. We’re going to figure that out.” It's happening. It's really happening. After being asked about Kevin Durant every day - 10 times a day - throughout the entirety of the offseason, Russell Westbrook is finally airing his grievances. It might just be one underhanded, sarcastic answer but it truly could be the beginning of one of the NBA's greatest rivalries. It doesn't even matter that Oklahoma City can't contend with Golden State as constructed, or that Kevin Durant somehow still believes that he and his former running mate are in good standing. Once basketball starts up and Russell's competitive juices get flowing there's going to be a goddamn tidal wave of resentment and vitriol heading KD's way. Every passive aggressive reference that he makes towards being happier now than he was as a member of the Thunder? Just another squirt of gasoline on the fire that's slowly but surely growing in Russell Westbrook's belly. Personally, I can't wait until he uses it to trial blaze the rest of the NBA. He's been good about maintaining his composure thus far, but once the basketball induced adrenaline kicks in Russell Westbrook is going to be a powder-keg of endless aggression, and - maybe more importantly - a bi-weekly source for not-so-subliminally vengeful quotes.
